  Instant Messenging Solutions

Instant messaging, or IM, allows employees to communicate in a manner similar to face-to-face interaction in that it allows a real-time conversation to take place without the inherent delay of e-mail. This real-time, interactive nature of IM makes it a valuable to tool for collaborative efforts with business partners, customers and fellow employees.

Due to the consumer-oriented beginnings of the technology, IM has developed without the typical enterprise emphasis on manageability, reliability and security. In addition, early adoption by consumers means that the technology is easily deployed, installed, and utilized, which are all benefits equally valuable for any business. The main question is, 'How can IM be utilized by employees without exposing a business to unnecessary risks?' The simple answer. Absolutely!

The Difference Between Public and Private IM?

With public IM services, all IM messages are routed externally through the Internet, even if senders and recipients are within the same company. The benefit of this approach is the widest possible reach to large, extensive communities of connected users. Use of products such as Yahoo, MSN, or AOL IM programs means that all traffic travels via the Internet before reaching its destination. However, all messages sent, and most importantly the contents of the message and any attachments, are exposed to hackers and malicious individuals, and therefore are subject to snooping and hacking.

Separately, enterprise IM products can provide greater levels of security, but without common IM protocol standards and the extensive public routing infrastructure of e-mail, this essentially creates isolated, single-company communities of IM users. What's so great about this? Well in 2005, INT Media Research stated the following statistics of businesses using corporate IM:

81% said their employees are more productive
19% said that file sharing had increased
E-mail traffic was down by 30-40%
  Voice mail was down 10%

So what do these numbers mean? Simply that with the use of IM, productivity goes up while the costs of operating other application decreases exponentially, meaning savings for your business!
