Authentication & Encryption |
| |
| |
Ask any business owner how valuable their data is, and time and time again they'll tell you it's the lifeblood of their business. Ask them how well they protect it from unauthorized users and you'll typically get a dazed look! Why? Because it's rarely ever encrypted!

What's The Difference? How Are They Similar? |
| |
| |
Encryption is the process of scrambling a message so that only the intended audience has access to the information. As more people share confidential data and applications using the Internet, they have come to rely on various encryption techniques. |
| |
| |
Separately, authentication is the process of determining whether someone is actually who they really should be. In private networks and over the Internet, authentication is commonly performed through usernames & passwords where knowledge of the password is assumed to guarantee that the user is authentic. Each user registers initially (or is registered by someone else), using an assigned or self-declared password. On each subsequent use, the user must know and use the previously declared password. The weakness in this system for transactions that are significant (such as the exchange of money) is that passwords can often be sniffed, or stolen. However, this is where encryption can help. |

Why Is Authentication & Encryption So Important? |
| |
| |
You probably get a little bit frustrated by all of the usernames and passwords that you have to put into the computer nowadays, but they are all there for a reason. If network-based computers or web sites did not have them, the information you provide to these sites or private networks would not be secure, and anyone could have access to them. That’s why authentication & encryption are so important.
| |
| |
If your company has sensitive data, like trade secrets or important customer credit card numbers locked up in your company's private network, you probably don’t want anyone getting a hold of that information, other than the people who are authorized to know! |
