  Denial of Service (DoS)

A DoS attack is a malicious attack on a network is designed to bring a network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic.

Hackers use DoS attacks to prevent legitimate uses of computer network resources such as mail or web servers. Some DoS attacks may even consume up all your business' bandwidth to the Internet. Some of the worst-case scenarios we've seen in the past is a Web site ceasing operation because of a successful DoS attack.

While a DoS attack may appear to be legitimate traffic on the network, it differs in that the volume and frequency of the traffic will increase to unmanageable levels. For example, an attack on a Web server includes rather a voluminous number of hits preventing the server from keeping up. On a mail server, millions of messages are sent to in a short period of time where normally a fraction of are regularly handled in the same time period. In either case, the targeted server would be brought to a halt from due to lack of memory, processing power, or network connections.

To ensure your company is protected from DoS attacks, see how we can help.
